Every morning these days when I walk I hear the varied thrush calling to each other. For many years now I have been hiking in the woods, in the Columbia Gorge and in the Cascade Mountains. I heard their call but I never knew which bird made that call. I called them the telephone bird as they make a short telephone ring kind of call. Last year as I was watching the birds in the yard I heard that call here at home. I took my binoculars out and went searching for a good look at the bird that was making that sound I had wondered about for so long. I know I could have gotten recordings of bird calls, but I like seeing them and figuring it out. I am happy to know which bird is ringing the phone now as I walk in the early mornings.
